Young cat left behind at West Yorkshire bus station recovering in RSPCA care

A young female cat who was abandoned at Halifax Bus Station after her owner travelled to London has a new home lined up thanks to the RSPCA.

The nine-month-old black and white cat was brought into the RSPCA’s Halifax, Huddersfield, Bradford & District Branch animal centre in Wade Street last Tuesday (8 October), after a member of staff at the town centre depot had found her left behind in her carrier.

She’s been named London by RSPCA staff – the destination her owner is believed to have been travelling to – and her friendly character has quickly won over everyone who is caring for her.

The RSPCA is highlighting London’s story as part of Adoptober, the charity’s month-long rehoming campaign which aims to boost adoption rates and focus on the many rescue animals who are waiting to find their perfect match.

David Aitken-Alexander, deputy manager at the Halifax animal centre, said: “As we’re just across the road from the bus station it was probably the first place the kind member of staff thought of when they realised that London had been left behind, and we were pleased to be able to help.

“We were told the owner had brought her to the bus station, but hadn’t booked a ticket for her to travel, so they took off but left her behind in her carrier.

“London hasn’t let this unpleasant experience affect her at all though, she’s settled into cattery life straight away. She’s a beautiful, confident, friendly and chatty little lady, who entertains everyone here with her funny little ways.

“We’re hopeful we’ve already got a wonderful new home lined up for her, so it’s only been a short stop with us, although we have lots of other cats who equally deserve a happy ending – some of whom have been with us considerably longer than London – and we’d encourage anyone who is thinking of welcoming a cat into their family tovisit our website.”

One of them is 18-year-old Tortoiseshell Paris. The golden oldie came into the centre’s care nearly six weeks ago after her owner sadly passed away. She’s described as an easy-going and sweet natured cat who will make the ‘perfect companion.’

Paris is currently enjoying some extra TLC in a foster home where she loves being in the company of humans and snuggling up on the sofa. Despite her advancing years, the senior moggie is still active and loves playing with toy mice. She could live with children aged 12 years and above, but due to her mature age would be better suited as the only pet in the home.

Also waiting for her perfect match is five year old Skyler who has been waiting over three months for someone to adopt her. The pretty tabby and white cat came into rescue after her owner was unable to cope and signed her over into the care of the RSPCA.

Skyler, who is also in a foster home, is another very loving cat who enjoys being stroked and will purr non-stop once she’s had a chance to get to know you.

She’s happy to be groomed and picked up and adores chasing her string toys. Skyler needs to be the only pet in the household and could live with sensible older children who will give her the necessary time and space to settle in her new home.

So far this year, the RSPCA’s Halifax, Huddersfield, Bradford & District Branch has rehomed 249 animals including 66 dogs, 149 cats and 12 rabbits. The branch is a self-funded charity helping animals across Halifax and the whole of the Calderdale, Huddersfield and Bradford areas.
