Urgent appeal for permanent foster home for dog with irreparable leg

RSPCA staff are urgently looking for a permanent foster home for a dog with a damaged leg who has been in kennels for more than 18 months.

Collie-cross Mia, aged eight, was rescued from Cyprus by another charity and brought over to the UK. She was taken in by the RSPCA in March 2023 after moving from another rescue centre.

She’s now been at the RSPCA’s Mount Noddy Animal Centre, in Chichester, for more than 18 months waiting patiently for her forever home.

Centre Manager Susan Botherway said: “When Mia was in Cyprus we understand she broke her leg – probably being hit by a car – and it was never treated so has never healed properly meaning she struggles with it sometimes.

“Unfortunately her leg is deteriorating so that’s why we’re searching for a permanent foster home for her – someone who can give her the love she deserves in a home environment while we continue to cover the costs of her pain relief to manage her leg.”

Mia is looking for a home locally – so the branch can continue to support her – where she’ll be the only pet and she’ll get to spend lots of time with her family.

Susan added: “Mia is a really friendly girl who absolutely loves fuss. She’s been reserved multiple times but, sadly, has always been let down at the last moment and we’re so desperate to get her into a home.

“She does sometimes bark at new people but she wants to be your best friend and will curl up for cuddles with you as soon as she knows you and trusts you. She’s just chatty!

“She’s a really gentle, calm dog who would suit a home in a quiet area. She’s friendly with other dogs but sometimes barks at them.”

Mia enjoys short, slow walks on the lead but does sometimes struggle on her leg so needs owners who will take it easy with her. Sadly she’s not suitable for surgery so the team has been managing her leg and would like her to go to a home where she can enjoy tottering around and sniffing in a garden, as well as playing scentwork games.

Susan said: “We have to limit the amount of exercise Mia can enjoy so, instead of long walks, we play fun scentwork games with her to keep her busy. She’s a clever girl and really enjoys sniffing out her toys and playing different sniffing games for her favourite treats.
