This National Black Cat Day: 100% of rescues find black cats the hardest to rehome

In a survey of rescue centres based across the UK, conducted by Agria Pet Insurance, 55% identified “appearance or colour” as the main reason cats are not adopted.

In fact, all respondents said they find it harder to rehome black cats than those of other colours, with 67% blaming perceptions of “bad luck”.

Colour has significantly more impact on adoption decisions than more serious considerations like “illness or disability” (15%), and “behavioural issues” (15%).

According to Google Trends, online searches for ‘black cat’ peak every year in the week leading up to Halloween as the public searches for costume ideas, with search interest increasing steadily each October for the past five years. But when it comes to bringing a furry friend home, black-coated felines are sadly left behind. Instead, searches for “adopt a Devon Rex”, “adopt a Russian Blue”, and “adopt a British shorthair” top the search volume for cat adoption*, indicating Brits’ preference for so-called “pedigree” breeds, often with colourful coats.

Agria’s survey also reveals that UK cat rescue centres are reaching their breaking point. The vast majority (74%) of centres take in more than 100 cats per year. Almost two-thirds (65%) have taken in more cats than usual in 2024, driven by the rising cost of living forcing many pet owners to make tough decisions. 45% of rescue centres are concerned for the future of their operations as a result.

Join the Agria CatWalk

To drive awareness of this cat rehoming crisis and inspire an adoption uptake, Agria is using National Black Cat Day 2024 to launch its official CatWalk. This three-week social media photo competition will award pet owners with the most Beautiful Black Cats, Action Heroes, and Diverse Divas.

The owner of the winner of each photo will nominate the rescue organisation of their choice to win a £1,000 donation, with their photogenic feline winning a luxury cat hamper full of toys and treats.

Billy, CEO at Wisteria Cat Rescue, based in Kent says, “Black cats are often seen in rescues more than any other colour, as sadly they often get overlooked. People tend to opt for different coloured colours including greys and gingers, but as a rescue it’s extremely important for us to promote the suitability of the cat to its home – rather than the colour!”

Karen Green, Rehoming Channel Manager at Agria says, “It is disappointing to discover that much of the UK still believes in the old myth that black cats bring bad luck. This superstition is preventing loveable animals from finding the forever homes they deserve. Here at Agria, we believe all cats are worthy of affection and care. This National Black Cat Day, we’re urging those who are able, to support their local rescue with a donation, or even consider if they are potential future owners of a black cat in need of a home.

“For those who are already proud owners of a fantastic feline – whether black or any other colour or pattern – don’t hesitate to get involved in the Agria CatWalk. This is a fantastic opportunity to celebrate everything we love about our furry friends, and raise awareness and funds for the deserving cause of rehoming rescued pets.”
