Shih Tzu has been waiting 250 days for new home

Dogs Trust Shoreham are appealing for a new home for a Shih Tzu who has been waiting for just over 250 days.

Six-year old Alfie has been waiting 10 times over the usual average time it takes for Shih Tzu’s at Dogs Trust to find a new home, which is 24 days.

Alfie was handed in to Dogs Trust in April 2019 and was instantly popular amongst his carers but hasn’t had much luck when it comes to finding his new family. Staff believe his struggles to find a home could be linked to the fact that he has some medical issues – diabetes and an eye condition that needs medication.

Tracey Rae, Rehoming Centre Manager at Dogs Trust Shoreham, says: “Upon arrival to the centre, Alfie was shy around people and found receiving his medication a bit daunting. After time and effort, staff were able to build strong bonds with him, building his confidence and giving him space to create positive associations around having his jabs. He is now much more at ease and able to cope

“Alfie is now at the point where he is ready for a new owner who won’t disregard this lovely little lad because of his medical needs and will be able to administer his medication with confidence. Alfie is a little shy and nervous, but once you have earned his friendship, he’ll show off his true loveable and cheeky character. He loves playing with toys and going for walks and is a great traveller in the car and is very affectionate once he knows you well.”

Due to the need for more consistent routine and some much-desired home comforts, Alfie is currently living in a temporary Foster Home.

Staff at Dogs Trust Shoreham request that you contact the rehoming team in advance of visiting the centre if you wish to know more about him. You can also visit the website www.dogstrust.org.uk.
