RSPCA commended in two award categories for learning at work programme

The RSPCA has been ‘commended’ by Learning at Work Week 2024 after hosting sessions for staff and volunteers on coaching, wellbeing and inclusivity.

The animal welfare charity came third in two categories: Inspiring a Lifelong Learning Culture Impact Award and the Supporting Business and Organisational Goals Impact Award.

Learning at Work Week takes place every May and this year the charity hosted a number of sessions for staff. Sessions included those on coaching and personal development, wellbeing and resilience, health issues, such as women’s midlife and the menopause, and neurodiversity. Workshops were also held on Makaton communication; and one exploring what is involved working in the RSPCA Operations Teams, to offer greater insight and share the experiences of those working on the frontline of animal welfare.

James Nelson, Learning and Development Advisor at the RSPCA and Learning at Work Week Coordinator, said: “As we mark our 200th anniversary this year, we are delighted that our efforts to help our teams develop and grow their skills have been recognised and rewarded.

“The whole week was a big team effort with a broad spectrum of our RSPCA family joining in to make it such a success.

“The RSPCA wants to see a world where every animal is respected and treated with kindness and compassion and this extends to every staff member, every branch and every one of our volunteers too.

“We want to make the RSPCA a great place to work and foster a strong sense of belonging to an inclusive and caring organisation which supports people’s wellbeing and empowers them to continue learning and upskilling. We would like to thank everyone who got involved and helped showcase the power of learning. We can’t wait for 2025!”

The topics of each session proved popular with 780 people pre-booking their places, which for accessibility, were all held virtually so that anyone no matter where they worked across the organisation could attend. Feedback following the events showed that 97% of people rated the sessions four or five out of five.

Julia Wright, National Director at Campaign for Learning, the national coordinators of Learning at Work Week and judges of the Supporting Business and Organisational Goals Impact Award said: “We were very impressed by the RSPCA’s Learning at Work Week campaign. Learning at Work Week is all about promoting the importance and benefits of lifelong learning. It’s crucial that people and organisations continue to build knowledge, skills and understanding to keep up with new developments and approaches so they continue to offer excellent services and care.

“The RSPCA’s Learning at Work Week demonstrates how well-crafted and creative learning campaigns can inspire a culture of lifelong learning, promote accessible opportunities and connect colleagues to the learning and skills they need now and in the future.”
