Rescue dog ‘paw-sitively’ fabulous after weight loss seeks forever home

Dogs Trust Shrewsbury is currently home to Shadow the Siberian Husky who has been on an incredible weight loss journey, and although he’s not done yet, he is ready to start his journey to a new home.

Eleven-year-old Shadow arrived at the centre in February weighing 50kg and now comes in at a much healthier weight of 42kg, a loss of 8kg, but there’s still some way to go as his target weight is 35kg.

Rachel Sutherland, Manager at Dog Trust Shrewsbury, says: “Shadow is a gorgeous boy but just like many of us as we get older, he’s put on some weight that he’d benefit from losing.

“Once he’d settled in, our vets worked out a weight loss programme which included reducing and carefully monitoring his food portions and ensuring he had regular, gentle exercise to help him shed weight and maintain an appropriately active lifestyle for his age.

“He has done so well! Because of his gorgeous fluffy coat, it can be hard to see how much slimmer he is, but he definitely is, so we’re now looking for a loving home for him with owners who will help him continue his weight loss journey so he can be healthy and happy and enjoy life to the full.”

This year isn’t the first time Shadow has been in the care of Dogs Trust Shrewsbury. After arriving two and a half years ago he has had three loving homes but each time due to a change in his owner’s circumstances, he has found himself back at the centre. He has always been adopted within just a few weeks of arriving, and the team are hoping it won’t be too long before this lovely boy finds a home of his own once more.

Shadow is looking for a retirement home where he can enjoy leisurely strolls as he loves exploring just as much as he loves being with people. He could live with children and he can potentially live with another calm dog. Although Shadow likes his independence, he also enjoys having a fuss made of him and adores being brushed.

Rachel says: “Shadow really is a gentle giant with a very sweet nature and it’s pure bad luck that he has found himself with us so many times. We are never surprised that he’s quickly welcomed into a new home, but he has been with us since February so this is by far the longest time he has spent with us and we’d love it if we were able to wave a fond farewell to him soon.

“Shadow will make a lovely, loyal canine companion and although he has lost some weight, he certainly isn’t a shadow of his former self. His personality remains larger than life!”
