As pet ownership continues to rise across the UK, a recent survey conducted by Petplan reveals that Brits are not only embracing the joys of pet parenthood, but also approaching it with a blend of financial savvy and emotional preparedness.
According to the survey of over 2000 UK pet owners, many Brits are adept at managing their finances for their beloved companions. On average, they budget and spend ÂŁ69 monthly on their pets, with variations based on pet type and region. Rabbit owners, for example, dedicate ÂŁ82 monthly, while dog owners follow closely behind with ÂŁ76.
Those in Greater London spend the most on their pet, with an average of ÂŁ90.89. Interestingly, younger pet owners, particularly Gen Z, tend to allocate more funds, with an average monthly spend of ÂŁ87. Beyond financial considerations, many pet owners are investing time and effort into understanding their petsâ needs. A significant 58% of respondents researched pet training before bringing their furry friend home. While seasoned pet owners rely on experience, younger generations, particularly Gen Z, demonstrate a hunger for knowledge, with 76% delving into pet training resources.
Navigating pet parenthood isnât just about financial and training preparations; itâs also about understanding the lifestyle adjustments and emotional commitments involved.
From discussing pet responsibilities with family members to contemplating the impact on personal routines, our survey found that pet owners are considering various factors before bringing pets into their homes. For example, 60% said they discussed their decision to get a pet and accompanying caring responsibilities with family members and/or housemates.
Many people, especially younger generations, sought companionship during lockdowns, leading to an increase in pet ownership. However, as normalcy returns, the challenges of managing pet care alongside more mobile lifestyles have become apparent. This trend is particularly evident among Gen Z, who were the most likely (41%) of any age group to say they wish theyâd considered how to manage the costs and care of their pet while theyâre away from home, compared to the average (29%).
Despite the challenges, the survey paints a picture of a pet-loving nation, with 86% of respondents feeling adequately prepared for pet ownership. Notably, rabbit owners emerge as the most prepared group, with 91% feeling ready for the journey ahead. Cities like Glasgow and Plymouth shine as the most pet-prepared, with 90% of respondents from these areas expressing confidence in their preparedness.
