Peter Purves launches campaign to keep older dogs active for life

Today legendary broadcaster Peter Purves together with joint supplement brand, YuMOVE launches a new ‘Life in the old dog yet’ campaign.

The new campaign aims to raise awareness of the importance of keeping old dogs active for life, whatever their age,

A poll commissioned by YuMOVE asked 2,000 dog owner if they thought about their dogs age in human years and how this affected their daily doggy routine.

YuMOVE asked if they could spot the sins of ageing about the preventative measures hey would take to ensure their dog remains active for life.

According to the poll, nearly 50% of owners wouldn’t have a clue what their beloved dog’s age was in human years. In fact, when asked whether their dog looked its ‘human’ age,  a whopping 47% of owners believed their dog looked a lot younger.

Of the dog owners surveyed, 90% consider their pooches to be much-loved members of the family, and almost 60% (58%) celebrate their dog’s birthday. But when it comes to their daily routine, only 23% of owners considered their dog’s age, and only 26% of dog owners were confident knowing the signs of old age.

When asked about specific daily activities, the survey revealed that just 52% of owners considered their dog’s age when walking, while activities such as playing fetch (27%) and jumping out of the boot of a car (29%) were significantly lower.

But when asked if they would adapt these activities after considering their dog’s human age, the overwhelming consensus was yes.

When asked specifically about their dog’s joint health, 62% of dog owners knew that jumping out of the boot of a car could have a detrimental effect on a dog’s joints, 54% walking on a slippery, tiled or laminated floor, 46% repetitive fetching of a ball.

But dog owners agreed overwhelmingly that if they knew the above activities affected a dog’s joints, they would change their behaviour and implement the following preventative measures:

  • 81% said they would carry their dog from the boot of their car rather than have it jump out.
  • 81% would avoid repetitive fetching
  • 77% would use non-slip mats in the home
  • 85% would adjust the number or length of walks
  • 61% would give them doggy joint supplements

Legendary broadcaster and YuMOVE Ambassador, Peter Purves comments: “I know a thing or two about staying active in one’s veteran stage. Dogs are vitally important to their owners, so let’s do the best for our pets. As dogs can’t speak, we’re hoping this campaign will raise awareness of the fact that dog owners always need to be mindful of their dogs’ age and perhaps adapt their daily routines to suit. I am delighted to support YuMOVE’s mission to keep dogs active for life.”

Gemma Cunningham, Campaign Manager at YuMOVE said: “This campaign is all about us helping dog owners to enable their dogs to lead an ‘active life, for life’ including having optimum joint health and mobility.”

Peter Purves, who last year was deemed too old to continue his commentating role at the prestigious dog show, will be returning to the event with YuMOVE.

Peter will be presenting daily highlights that will be broadcast on YuMOVE’s social media channels. Follow YuMOVE on Facebook and Instagram to see Peter Purves returning to Crufts.
