One-eyed cat needs new home after his previous owner could no longer care for him

The RSPCA is appealing to find a home for a one-eyed 11-year-old cat who sadly came into the charity’s care earlier this month.

Gabriel is being cared for by the RSPCA Stafford, Wolverhampton and District Branch after his previous owner of 11-years was sadly diagnosed with dementia and was struggling to care for Gabriel.

He was looked after by a family member temporarily before coming into the charity’s care earlier this month.

Tracey Rogers from the branch, said: “Gabriel is a beautiful older gentleman who spent his entire life with his previous owner before she sadly had to go into a care home. We can tell he’s missing her and feeling a little sad but generally he is an absolute sweetheart – a very friendly cat who just loves company.

“We are concerned, however, that as we approach kitten season* and inevitably end up inundated with kittens, that Gabriel will be overlooked and could end up in our care for a while. We are desperate to get him a lovely retirement home as soon as we can.

“Gabriel sadly lost his eye a few years ago due to a detached retina but this doesn’t impede him at all – he acts like a regular cat with two eyes! I think if anything it gives him character!”

Gabriel will need an owner who is around for a good part of the day as he likes company. He would prefer to be the only pet in the home, and could live with children who are secondary school age or older. Gabriel is also likely to spend more time inside. He uses his litter tray well, has a healthy appetite and just loves to be close to his carers.

Tracey added: “Our volunteers at the branch have fallen in love with Gabriel and we know his new owner will too. Gabriel is a lovely cat who is looking for a comfy sofa, which isn’t too high for him as he does have the start of arthritis in his hips, and someone who can give him all the love and attention he deserves!”

What is Kitten Season?

This takes place between May and September and is typically the time of year when most kittens are born. During this time, rescue centres see an influx of kittens coming into their care. Sadly, this is often a result of unexpected litters of kittens being born which is why the RSPCA urges cat owners to neuter their cats to help tackle the issue of unwanted kittens ending up in rescue centres at a time when our centres are already full-to-bursting – and to please adopt a rescue cat where you can.
