An affectionate and playful three-legged Lurcher named Puffin has started a new life in Middlesex after spending almost three months in the care of leading animal welfare charity, Battersea.
Two-year-old Puffin was brought to Battersea’s Old Windsor centre after being found as a stray. On arrival at the centre, the charity’s veterinary experts noticed that she had an injury on one of her back legs which was causing her to limp. After finding that her leg was not healing, Battersea’s Clinic team made the decision to amputate Puffin’s leg to ensure that she could live her life to the full.
Thankfully, with the help of Battersea’s experts and a dedicated foster carer, Puffin was soon healing, surpassing everyone’s expectations and adapting in record time. She quickly began enjoying shorter walks, exploring new smells and running around with a tennis ball in tow.
Zenya Green, Battersea Team Leader and Puffin’s foster carer, said: “After Puffin’s amputation she coped really well, all she really needed to work on was her balance. Within a couple of days, she was back out for walks and seemed a lot happier. Despite only having three legs she was all go and loved to spin and do zoomies around the house and garden. She’s very cheeky though and did chew through my trainer laces a couple of times! She also loves to watch the television, especially all the athletics that was on during her recuperation.”
After almost three months in Battersea’s care, Puffin was ready to find a new home to call her own. It wasn’t long before she was spotted by a couple in Middlesex who immediately took a shine to her and knew she was the dog for them.
Talking about how Puffin has been settling into her new home, her new owners Jan and Dave said: “When we saw Puffin on the Battersea website, we instantly fell in love with her. We didn’t know she only had three legs, but it made no difference. She has proven to be a bright, loving, cheeky and sweet girl who has fitted right into our lives. All of our neighbours love her, and she has to say hello to everyone who passes by. We want to thank Battersea for bringing her into our lives, she has become part of the family already.”
