New partnership between Dogs Trust and Butternut Box will reduce rabies in dogs in Thailand

In the lead-up to World Rabies Day on 28 September, Dogs Trust has announced a new partnership with fresh dog food company Butternut Box in a project that will reduce rabies cases in Thailand.

The UK’s largest canine welfare charity also has an international team, Dogs Trust Worldwide, helping dogs around the world. This collaboration between Dogs Trust and Butternut Box will support a dog neutering and vaccination project in Chonburi, a province of Thailand where risk of rabies and the number of roaming dogs is a severe problem. The project aims to reach 40,000 dogs over the next two years.

The Butternut Box partnership will help fund Dogs Trust’s support of the Thai charity, Soi Dog Foundation, to deliver a ‘Catch, Neuter, Vaccinate, Return’ programme (CNVR), which reduces the spread of rabies and aims to control the population of dogs on the streets.

It is estimated that there are over 8 million roaming dogs throughout Thailand, all living with the everyday realities of disease and overpopulation. Rabies is fatal to both dogs and humans, claiming thousands of lives each year.

Karen Reed, Director of Dogs Trust Worldwide said: “We are delighted to be partnering with Butternut Box to support our vital work in Thailand. Sadly, rabies is fatal and there is no cure, but it is 100% preventable, so the work of the Dogs Trust Worldwide team, with support from Butternut Box is crucial to reduce cases to save countless lives.

“At Dogs Trust we are striving to ensure that every dog across the world is healthy and living happily within communities, so Butternut Box’s generous donation will enable us to get one step closer to reducing the number of stray dogs, improving their health and welfare and work towards making the province rabies free.”

Dave Nolan, co-founder of Butternut Box said: “This project has really captured the hearts of all of us at Butternut Box. Since day one, we’ve been clear that our mission is to bring health and happiness to dogs everywhere, and the Chonburi Project is a fantastic opportunity to make that a reality, by helping to improve the lives of roaming dogs in Thailand.

“Together with Dogs Trust, we know we can make a serious difference. We couldn’t be prouder to be working with an organisation whose mission and purpose are so aligned with ours. Projects like this simply wouldn’t get off the ground without the help of our brilliant customers – we’re incredibly thankful for their continued support.”
