This week the Competition and Market Authority (CMA) announced a formal market investigation into veterinary services in the domestic pet market with many pet owners sharing their frustration over high bills and affordability.
In light of this Axel Lagercrantz, CEO of Pets4Homes shares his advice on how to find the right vet for your pet, as well as tops tips on how to maintain your pet’s health.
Avoiding the doghouse: the right vet for your pet
Visit the practice before you register your pet
Most practices will accommodate you if you request a tour and are flexible with timing. During the visit, observe the cleanliness and organisation of the facilities, especially the prep and operating rooms. Inquire about the staff’s experience and interests, and examine the kennel and isolation areas to ensure pets are kept in a comfortable and well-organised environment
Find out more about facilities & specialties
It’s a good idea to inquire into the services provided. You may want to check whether the following facilities are available: X rays, ultrasounds, in house blood testing equipment, 24 hour emergency care, and alternative therapies like acupuncture. If you travel with your pet, also check whether the practice can issue a pet passport.
Check whether your prospective practice is accredited
50% of veterinary surgeries in the UK participate in the RCVS practice standards scheme. These organisations are inspected every 4 years, with intermittent spot checks, to determine the standards of hygiene, staff training, basic equipment and emergency provisions. Choosing an accredited practice demonstrates accountability and a commitment to quality.
Ask about prices
The cost of vaccinating or even having a general health check for your pet can vary from practice to practice, so ask to see a price list before you register.
It’s acceptable to switch practices if you are unhappy with the service provided However, make sure that you inform both your former and current surgeries that you wish to change so they can keep your pet’s medical record up to date. Try to avoid registering your pet at more than one practice, as this can cause paperwork problems in the event of illness or injury.
Top tips to keep your pet healthy and vet bills down
A healthy diet equals a healthy pet!
A good diet is really important to ensure good health for your pets. For cats, who are obligate carnivores, this should include wet food with a high content of meat. This is where cats get most of their nutrition and water intake. Dogs thrive best off a mixed diet of both wet and dry food. Alternatively, dogs can eat a raw food diet that you prepare at home, but be sure to do your research to make sure they’re getting the nutrition they need. Try to avoid feeding them human food off your plate as this can result in weight gain, and them missing out on important nutrients.
Ensure they get enough exercise
Dogs need differing amounts of exercise depending on their age, breed, and health. Most dogs need to have a brisk walk at least once a day to stimulate them mentally and physically. Outdoor cats usually get their daily exercise by themselves, but for indoor cats, you may need to encourage them to exercise via playing, or even taking them on walks.
Practise good dental hygiene
Dental care is important, especially in cats! Brush your feline friend’s teeth, ideally from a young age, in order to prevent issues cropping up later in life. There are dental toys and treats available for both cats and dogs to make taking care of their teeth easier.
Provide plenty of love!
Giving plenty of care and love to your pet is important because it fosters a strong bond, reduces their stress and anxiety, and contributes to their overall well-being. Love and attention provide mental stimulation and emotional security, encouraging positive behaviour and trust. This affection ensures pets feel valued and happy, ultimately leading to a healthier and more fulfilling life for them.
