Happy 18th Birthday to Fabulous Fern

A much-loved rescue dog re-homed as a puppy from Dogs Trust Darlington in 2004 will be marking a birthday milestone this weekend as she celebrates her 18th birthday.

Fern was just eight weeks old when she was adopted nearly two decades ago by Andrew and Fiona Blakemore, from Spennymoor, Country Durham.

Adopted as a family pet for their children Amy and Daniel, then aged ten and eight, Fern is now equally as loved by the next generation, with Andrew and Fionaā€™s grandchildren playing with her every time they visit.

Speaking about ā€œtheir soulmate pupsterā€, Andrew said: ā€œFrom day one Fern was an outstanding dog with the most beautiful temperament. She loved playing with our children, Amy and Daniel. Even now at her more mature age, as soon as my grandchildren arrive, she awakes from a snooze, and is youthful and playful. Over the years she has helped lots of children who were scared of dogs to realise that dogs like Fern arenā€™t anything to be scared of.

ā€œFern is our soulmate pupster. There will never be another like her. She is loved by all of us in the family, even our cats. We currently have five rescue cats that she lives happily with and if the opportunity arises to steal their food, she is there.

ā€œQuite simply she has been a delight her entire life and we will be forever grateful to everyone at Dogs Trust for bringing Fern into our family. Itā€™s hard to believe she will turn 18 on 14th August but we will make sure she enjoys being extra spoiled on her special day.ā€

Sharon Boult, Assistant Manager Operations at Darlington Rehoming Centre said: ā€œIt is always fantastic to receive updates from owners who have adopted dogs from us and what an incredibly special update this is.Ā  We are thrilled to hear how much joy Fern has brought to the Blakemoreā€™s lives for 18 years.Ā  We are all wishing wonderful Fern an equally wonderful Happy Birthday.ā€
