Dressing up is a classic part of Halloween – for pets, as well as people. So, with the spooky celebration just days away, Go.Compare has analysed over 1,200 online keywords to reveal the top ten most searched for costumes for both dogs and cats in the run-up to Halloween.

Featuring outfits both cute and creepy, the top ten list for Halloween 2022 shows that classic costumes still hold mass appeal – though there are a few spooky surprises in the mix.

With 2,400 monthly online searches, spider costumes are the number one pick for the nation’s dog owners, followed by pumpkins, and then dog-sized suits. The creepy Chucky character features highly in fourth place, while other characters from film and TV – Alice in Wonderland, and Stitch from Lilo and Stitch – also feature in the top ten.

While feline fancy dress seems less widespread, cat owners have still been searching for a variety of costumes – with pumpkins, gingerbread and pirates in the top three spots. Superheroes also claim two top spots, with Spiderman in 7th place and Thor in 9th.

Ceri McMillan, Go.Compare’s pet insurance expert and cat lover, said, “It seems humans have some competition this Halloween when it comes to being best-dressed – judging by the most popular online search terms, we’ll be seeing our four-legged friends as dinosaurs, sharks, princesses and pirates this year, among other things.

“Our advice to pet owners who are considering shopping for a pet costume is to purchase from a reputable retailer, making sure the outfit is safe and suitable for your pet. Check your pet is comfortable and that the costume doesn’t restrict breathing, vision or movement in any way. Also, dogs and cats should never be left unattended while wearing the costumes.

“Halloween is lots of fun for many, but it does bring hazards for pets – such as chocolates and sweets, which are toxic for animals – so make sure these are always out of reach, and have the right pet insurance policy in place too. Make sure to compare what cover is available so you can find the best policy for your pet’s needs and your budget.”
