Dogs Trust is appealing to dog lovers to consider adopting an overlooked older dog as the nation prepares to celebrate older people on Grandparents Day (1 October).
Since June this year, almost 40% of people wanting to adopt a dog from Dogs Trust were looking for a four-legged friend under six months, compared to just 10% looking for a dog aged 8 and over.*
One golden oldie currently patiently waiting to find a new family of his own is 17-year-old Jack Russell, Marley, who arrived at Dogs Trust in May after his owner sadly passed away. He is still full of life and adores a day trip, as well as a caravan adventure, and bubbly toy-lover Crossbreed Scout, who recently celebrated his tenth birthday, has his paws crossed that he will be settled in his forever home well before his eleventh birthday comes round.
Staffordshire Bull Terrier Cross, Rover, is twelve but he doesn’t seem to recognise he’s now an older boy. He lives every day to the full and can usually be found running around with a squeaky ball or enjoying a tasty chew.
Sue Bromley, Assistant Manager at Dogs Trust’s rehoming centre in Shrewsbury, said: “Sometimes older dogs can be overlooked in favour of younger pups, but they deserve just as much attention and care from new owners as their younger counterparts. There are lots of benefits of rehoming an Old Age Pooch. Often older dogs don’t need quite as much exercise and although they can be a little less energetic, senior canines can be just as fun and playful.
“Older dogs are more likely to be fully house-trained and, as they are older and wiser, they usually know other training basics too, but you can certainly still teach an older dog new tricks. They can also make the perfect napping partner and enjoy a good snooze and a snuggle.
“Every dog is individual and just like with younger dogs, our golden oldies will want different things from their lives with their forever families. You might want a dog that still enjoys a lovely walk or a trip to the beach, or you may prefer one who likes a short potter before a lovely nap alongside you on the sofa. Whatever someone is looking for from a four-legged friend, we’re sure we can find the perfect match for them.
“Knowing you are transforming the life of an older dog who has had to leave behind everything they have ever known is a wonderful thing and we know you will be rewarded with bundles of love and loyalty in return.”
