Over one hundred dogs have been rehomed by Dogs Trust in Cumbria since January this year, with poodle-cross Peaches having the wonderful accolade of being the 100th pooch to find a new abode.
As staff at Penrith waved a happy farewell to one-year-old Peaches, it was time to hang out the bunting and celebrate the success of the new system which was launched in 2022.
The charity doesn’t have a Rehoming Centre in the county, but instead rehomes locally direct from the homes of dedicated fosterer carers. There are currently 14 Home from Home fosterers within Cumbria, caring for dogs on a temporary basis until their forever homes are found.
Peaches was found as a stray and spent three weeks with her foster carer before finding her loving new home with Mr and Mrs Hague from Yorkshire. After a name change, now Poppy, she is enjoying frequent holidays in a motorhome.
Amy Redpath, Assistant Manager at Penrith Transfer Centre said: “It was a fantastic to reach this milestone of 100 dogs rehomed and we did pause for a moment as a team to celebrate the success.
“We are extremely grateful to our current foster carers for the amazing job they do. Rehoming our dogs would simply not be possible without them. We are always looking for more fosterers so would love to hear from anyone interested in finding out more.”
Of the dogs rehomed this year, 66 have been rehomed within Cumbria. There have been over 20 different breeds with the top three breeds finding new homes being terrier (23), collie (19) and lurcher (12) with 30 being OAP’s (Older Age Pooches) aged eight and over.
A lot of dogs are in foster for a short time, but others can take a little longer to find their special someone like 10-year-old Jack Russell terrier Arthur who has been in foster for a few months. Arthur is looking for an adult only home without pets.
