Dog with rare disease seeks home

A “sweet, friendly” dog who suffers from a rare disease affecting her hormones is searching for a new home after being cared for by the RSPCA.

Poodle cross Ayda came into RSPCA Sussex North & Brighton Branch last month from another centre.

She suffers from hypoadrenocorticism – also known as Addison’s disease – which also affects humans. The condition means the adrenal glands do not produce enough hormones. This does not pass from dogs to humans.

RSPCA Brighton Manager Jenny Eden said: “Ayda is around three to four-years-old and is a sweet, friendly dog.

“She’s a lively dog who loves to run around and play; she’s full of life, she’s always making us smile as she bounds and bounces around! Her favourite thing to do is play with a ball, and she’s very intelligent so she loves learning new tricks and games. Any potential adopters need to be aware that she suffers from Addison’s disease and that this is a lifelong condition which needs regular medication. We’re happy to discuss her treatment plan with anyone interested in adopting her.”

Ayda has lived a sheltered life and has had limited life experiences so she can be worried in new situations. She’s missed out on early socialisation with other dogs and is shy – so she’d benefit from further training and more positive interactions with other dogs in her new home.

Jenny added: “Ayda has really started to come out of her shell at the shelter and she is already building some strong bonds with our staff and volunteers. She’s loving, friendly and loves a fuss.

“She’s also made friends with some of our calm, quiet dogs and enjoys spending time with them so we’re sure she’ll make other doggy pals once she’s settled in her new home, and she’ll likely grow in confidence when meeting other pets.

“We’ve only had Ayda with us for a short amount of time so we’re still getting to know her and learn more about her. But we do already know that she’s a sweet dog who will make a wonderful pet for the right family.”

This year the RSPCA celebrates its 200th year of changing industries, laws, minds, and animals’ lives. To mark this anniversary the animal welfare charity wants to inspire one million people to join their movement to improve animals’ lives. Together, there are actions, big and small, everyone can take to create a better world for every animal. As part of its celebrations, the RSPCA recently revealed that in the 10 years up until the end of 2022 the RSPCA’s branch partners found new homes for a staggering 17,539 animals in East Sussex.

Nationally the charity has rehomed 405,839 pets in need of a new home since 2013 thanks to its network of 140 branches and animal centres across England and Wales – which equates to 111 animals every day.
