An overweight dog has lost 13kg (28.7lb) in the search for a healthier life and a fresh start.
Staffie-cross Missy was taken in by the RSPCA in March 2023 when her owner moved into sheltered accommodation and the dog needed somewhere to go.
The six-year-old has won over the whole team at the RSPCA’s Birmingham Animal Centre as she went on her weight-loss journey so she’d be healthy enough to find a new home.
Kennel Supervisor Kelly Legg said: “Missy was quite overweight when she came into our care and weighed a massive 43kg (94.8lb)! Thankfully, due to a careful diet and exercise plan, she’s now lost 13kg (28.7lb) and is a much healthier 30kg (66.1lb).
“Missy has a real zest for life and is such a sweet, cheeky dog. She’s a happy-go-lucky dog who enjoys going for walks and relaxing at home.
“When she first arrived here she was sad, shut down and scared – and struggling due to her extra weight. Now she has a newfound sense of energy and is bouncy, happy and has only one speed setting: zoomies!
“She loves to play with a football, however, she also knows how to relax and loves to snooze on the sofa.”
It’s good that Missy is a calm and patient dog because she’s had to wait 18 months so far to find a new home. Missy spent some time in a foster home but is now desperately hoping to find a forever home.
The team would like to find Missy a home where she can enjoy playing in a garden and will be the only pet. She can find it difficult to be left home alone so needs owners who will, initially, be home with her before slowly introducing her to being on her own.
Kelly added: “Missy’s confidence has grown a lot since she’s been with us and she’s been such a brave girl so we’d love to find her a home with patient owners who can continue to build her confidence.
“We’d like them to come and meet her here at the centre a few times beforehand so she can build up a bond with them. Once she knows and trusts you, she will truly be a friend for life.”
