An elderly dog whose owner passed away before Christmas has her paws crossed in the hope that she will soon find a new loving home.
At the grand old age of 17, Bella the Terrier Cross is the oldest resident at Dogs Trust Ilfracombe, but she is now looking for a second chance at happiness and to spend his twilight years in a loving home.
Elise Watson, Rehoming Centre Manager at Dogs Trust Ilfracombe, said: “It’s always sad when older dogs come to us after their whole world has change but Bella is slowly starting to come out of her shell and has been placed in a temporary foster home so he can enjoy the home comforts she is used to.
“We are looking for a calm and quiet home for Bella with owners who’ll provide her with plenty of company and fuss, as well as give her plenty of time to settle in and allow her true character to shine through. She has built a wonderful bond with her foster carer and enjoys a couple of short walks a day, followed by forty winks in her bed.
“We know we can’t fill the space left by her beloved owner, only a new caring family can do that. But we hope it won’t be long before a new owner comes forward and gives her the love she deserves very soon.”
Dogs Trust Ilfracombe has a number of older dogs in its care at the moment and are keen to encourage people to consider the advantages of owning an older dog, which include:
- They need less exercise but are still just as fun.
- They are used to living in a home so come house-trained and are not as destructive as a puppy.
- Their personality is already shaped so new owners can really understand and appreciate the dog they are welcoming into their family.
