A new study by Burns Pet Nutrition has revealed felines are not only considerably more ‘low maintenance’ than dogs, they also are cleaner, more self-sufficient and cheaper to own.
The research comes ahead of International Cat Day on August 8, a day of importance for a third of UK households that are home to an estimated 12.5million domestic felines.
The verdict of 2,000 dog and cat owners is that felines are considerably easier to own – making them the best choice for a family wavering on which four-legged friend to adopt.
Half (54%) of owners said cats were the cleaner pet compared to 16% who said dogs. Two-fifths (40%) said cats were ‘less smelly’ compared to 10% who said dogs easier on the nose.
A quarter (26%) said they prefer cats because you never need to pick up their mess, compared to an eyebrow-raising two per cent who said the same for dogs.
Two-fifths (39%) of owners also said cats were more independent and more ‘low maintenance’ than dogs, who scored 8% and 4% respectively.
When it comes to costs, a third (30%) of owners believe cats are cheaper pet to own compared to 4% who said dogs – and a tally of expenses confirms this.
The poll revealed cat owners spend an average of £4,144 on their precious puss throughout the year compared to dog owners who spend £4,254.
But it’s not all bad news for dogs, who were standout favourites in a series of other categories like being more affectionate, intelligent, easier to train and more cuddly.
Emily Boardman- Pet Nutritionist and Veterinary Specialist : “By their nature, cats are more independent – but that’s not to say they don’t like human companionship.
“Cats can be just as attentive and affectionate as dogs, but they express their love in a different way.
“If you’re considering a pet, and are concerned about the time, money and commitment that having dog will mean, then a cat could be the ultimate starter pet for your home.
“But remember, just because cats are more self-sufficient, that doesn’t mean they are any less of a responsibility.
“Do your research, and ask yourself if you are really ready to welcome a new member into your family.”
