A local RSPCA branch is appealing for funds to cover the £3,000 surgery to rid a rescue dog of cancer.
Six-year-old springer spaniel Daisy was taken in by the RSPCA in October after she’d been found tied to a tree in Kent.
She’s now being cared for by RSPCA Essex South, Southend & District Branch in Essex.
Mette Summers, from the branch, said: “Daisy was taken into a vet to be put to sleep but the vets refused. She ended up being taken in by another vet after a member of the public found her tied to a tree, and her abandonment was then reported to the RSPCA.”
Daisy was still microchipped to her original breeder and there are signs that she’s been used for breeding and has had multiple litters.
But the key concern was for her health. She had a large mass (the size of a tennis ball) which was ulcerated and further tests found she was also suffering from bladder stones and a urinary infection.
Mette added: “Daisy came into foster with me and I noticed that her urine was dark with blood and she was passing some bladder stones too.
“She went in for a cystostomy – a surgical procedure to remove obstructions from the bladder – and to have the mammary mass removed. When the mass was sent back for testing it sadly showed that she was suffering from cancer.”
Daisy needed further surgery to remove another mass and vets felt the best option would be to remove the whole mammary strip and spay her to reduce the chance of the cancer spreading.
Mette: “The wonderful news now is that vets and confident they’ve removed all of the cancer and that Daisy is now cancer-free!
“Daisy is still recovering from her second surgery but she’s doing really well and is beginning to settle into our home and really come out of her shell.
“She is a sweet dog with a wonderful temperament and a positive outlook on life, despite everything she’s been going through recently. She’s been a real trooper through all of the surgery; she never stops wagging her tail.”
While Daisy isn’t quite ready to begin her search for a new home yet, the team at RSPCA Essex South, Southend & District Branch are appealing to the public to help with the mounting costs of her treatment, surgery and ongoing care.
They expect the bill to top £4,000 – and they’ve launched a JustGiving appeal to raise £3,000 to pay for the bills as they stand so far.
