Animal lover raises £800 at charity golf day

A Sussex golf club has raised £800 in funds to help the RSPCA at the club’s charity day.

The Avisford Golf Club in Walberton near Arundel is raising funds for the animal welfare charity after this year’s captain Jayson Walker chose to support the RSPCA throughout the year, as well at their special events.

The first even, the Captain’s Day was held on Sunday May 19 followed by a further event on the Clubs Charity Day on Sunday (28 July).

Jayson, from Littlehampton, said: “It was a fantastic day with over 50 golfers playing and a visit from Inspector Julie Parsons, which really helped to bring it to life for the members to hear about the work of the RSPCA.

“There was more than £800 raised on the day from the entrance fee, the raffle and ‘fines’ for golf blunders. In total, we have raised more than £1,400 this year.”

The annual charity day saw plenty of competitions, a raffle and an auction of top prizes. There were also ‘fines’ for losing a golf ball, going out of bounds and other golfing blunders.

Throughout the year the golf club also has collections for certain holes and bunkers with a 50p payment to the RSPCA collection tin. The Captain’s Day gave members the opportunity to win a car by getting a hole in one which was narrowly missed by Steve Redfern.

The money raised will help to provide specialist equipment to enable inspectors to continue to rescue animals in need. In 2018, the charity’s officers rescued 102,900 animals from cats stuck in sticky situations to wildlife needing assistance.

The frontline officers work tirelessly to save vulnerable, injured and abused animals every hour or every day.

RSPCA inspector Julie Parsons said: “It’s great to see Avisford Gold Club really get behind our cause and raise funds for animals who need our help. As an officer working on the frontline, I see first-hand the abuse and neglect that animals can suffer and how the RSPCA is able to turn their lives around.

“Fundraisers like this golf day are incredibly important to help us continue this vital work rescuing, rehabilitating and rehoming animals in desperate need of care.”
