As part of its ‘Rescue a Rescue’ campaign, Agria has partnered with 11 animal charities and rescue centres across the UK to raise awareness of animals in need of forever homes.
One lucky Runcorn-based charity, Cheshire Sighthound Rescue, has been chosen by Agria to receive a £1000 donation and its support in rehoming ‘Rescue Mascot’, Dixie – a sweet but anxious Bull Lurcher who’s had more than her fair share of bad luck.
Meet Dixie: A pooch hoping third time’s the charm
Dixie is an eight-year-old female Bull Lurcher who has been taken in by Cheshire Sighthound Rescue not once, but twice – both times through no fault of her own. In 2022, Dixie’s owner moved abroad and couldn’t bring her along. After just seven months at the rescue centre, Dixie thought she’d found her forever home, but her adoption didn’t last long as her second owner had to give her up due to an increase in working hours.
Fun-loving, active and loyal, Dixie is an incredibly loving companion in search of a peaceful permanent home. She loves playing tug of war, sniffing around, and having plenty of blankets to herself.
Dixie would suit an experienced pet owner as Bull Lurchers can make for a challenging breed combination, demonstrated in Dixie’s headstrong nature, dog-reactive tendencies, and anxiety in unfamiliar environments. However, the rewards for the owner who has the compassion to support and nurture Dixie’s soft side are immense. Once settled into a routine she feels safe in, she loves nothing more than snuggling up on the sofa with her favourite person and resting her head or paw on them.
Due to her tumultuous and disrupted life so far, Dixie struggles in a kennel environment and is incredibly anxious, making it especially urgent to find her the home she deserves. Dixie would thrive as the only pet in a home with adults and teenagers aged 16+, with an owner who has the time, patience and compassion to rehabilitate her with gentle play and quiet walks – and defend her from the dreaded vacuum cleaner!
A call to the north west’s animal lovers
Agria’s ‘Rescue a Rescue’ campaign is asking animal lovers across the North West to consider opening their hearts and homes to Dixie or any of the other wonderful animals currently in rescue centres. If you’re based in the North West region and are seriously looking to commit to a new pet, giving Dixie the calm, loving home she needs, please get in touch with Cheshire Sighthound Rescue.
Initially inspired by the spike in animals looking for homes following the peak of new pets in 2020, the Rescue a Rescue campaign has been running annually since 2021. The £11,000 donation across all rescue centres involved adds to the £2M total that Agria has already contributed to animal welfare charities. By raising awareness of the UK’s huge need for rehoming, Agria hopes to find homes for more animals than just its 13 ‘Rescue a Rescue’ mascots.
Agria Ambassador and Animal Welfare Activist, Jodie Kidd said of the campaign:“As a passionate pet lover, the rescue cause is one that’s incredibly close to my heart. While lockdown inspired a huge uptick in pet ownership, it has also since resulted in record numbers of animals being dropped off at shelters and rescue centres as lifestyles change and new owners realise the true responsibility of proper pet care. I’m proud to support Agria in its mission to find homes for every Rescue a Rescue mascot. Together, we can inspire a greater movement to rehome the thousands of deserving animals across the UK, currently waiting for the chance of a lifetime – the chance to be loved.”
Karen Green, Rehoming Partner Manager at Agria Pet Insurance, said:“By adopting rescue animals, you not only transform their lives – they will transform yours as well. Dixie is the perfect example of why we’ve launched our ‘Rescue a Rescue’ campaign. By supporting animal rescue charities like Cheshire Sighthound Rescue, we hope to encourage more people to adopt. These pets have so much love to give, and by opening your home to one, you’re truly making a difference in their life – and your own.”
Naomi Temperley, Spokesperson for Cheshire Sighthound Rescue, said: “We can’t thank Agria enough for its generous donation and for helping to raise awareness of giving both of Dixie and other animals a home. The donation will help us fund the kennels, which can be as much as £22 per day, as well as vet bills and beyond. Dixie is such a sweet, affectionate dog, who our staff are desperate to secure a happy ending for so she can truly thrive. We’re hopeful that with Agria’s support, we’ll find her the perfect home where she’ll be cherished for the rest of her life.”
It is estimated that approximately 100,000 dogs and 150,000 cats are currently sitting in shelters, waiting for their perfect owner to come along and give them a permanent home where they can feel safe and loved*. That’s why Agria is using its latest campaign, Rescue a Rescue to encourage the public to adopt an animal in need – with 10 pets still in Agria’s Rescue a Rescue cohort searching for their dream homes, including the North West’s very own Dixie.
