A three-legged rescue dog has found his forever home thanks to Dogs Trust Ilfracombe, after waiting over three years for someone to fall in love with him.
Five-year-old Lurcher, Paxo, originally arrived at Dogs Trust Newbury in January 2020 when he was found as a stray. He arrived with a deformity on his right leg which was causing him pain, so the expert vet team made the decision to amputate his leg to make him comfortable. Paxo has adapted very well to life on three legs.
After receiving very little interest from potential adopters at the Newbury centre, he came to Dogs Trust Ilfracombe in July 2022 in the hope he’d catch the eye of a loving adopter.
After a seven month wait at the Ilfracombe rehoming centre the tri-pawd pooch found his special someone when Jane Wardle and Jeremy Tandy from Exeterapplied to adopt him after seeing him on the website.
Jane says: “We can’t imagine life without Paxo now! We spent about a month getting to know him at the centre which allowed us both time to figure out if we were right for each other. We did several meets at the rehoming centre, as well as our home, and his behaviour team gave us several one-to-one sessions to help us get to understand how to work with him with some of his behavioural needs such as his reactions to other dogs and vet handling. These were really useful, and it was also reassuring to know that they’re always just a call away for the rest of Paxo’s life, in case we ever need them.
“Paxo hasn’t lived in a home for a long time, if ever, so we know it’s going to take some time for him to fully settle with us. But so far so good and it’s safe to say he’s here to stay!”
Paxo is one of 25 lucky dogs of all ages, shapes and sizes at Dogs Trust Ilfracombe who have already found loving homes this year.
Rogan Quinn, Assistant Manager at Dogs Trust Ilfracombe, said: “Paxo was with us for a little while but we are so happy we were able to help him find his happy ending. It was fantastic to finally wave a fond farewell to him!
“Paxo was a huge favourite amongst staff but he needed quite a specific home life with limited visitors and access to quiet walks due to his reactions to unknown dogs and people. He also needed a patient family who could continue with his training, help him feel safe and secure and provide him with ongoing support for veterinary handling and physiotherapy.
“When Jane and Jeremy applied to adopt him, we were delighted because they had the perfect home environment for him and have spent a long time getting to know Paxo so he was comfortable around them, with the support of his wonderful carers who prepared him for life in a new home.
“Seeing our dogs go to their new homes is why we do the job we do, and we are all absolutely delighted Paxo has finally landed on all three paws with his new family.”
